Take Action

5 things every Sorrento East homeowner can do today.

Step 1: Sign the Petition

Add your name to the growing list of homeowners who oppose speed cushion installation. Your signature is submitted to both the SEPOA Board and Sarasota County.

Step 2: Email Sarasota County Directly (Highest Impact)

If you own a parcel on a Sorrento East street being considered for speed cushions, this is the single most decisive action you can take. Email the County's point of contact and state your opposition on the record.

Under Sarasota County's RNTMP Part II process, if less than 2/3 of abutting parcel owners support the request, it is denied. Your email of opposition counts toward the 1/3 threshold that defeats the petition.

Email: wmahmoud@scgov.net
Phone: 311 or 941-861-5000
Address: 1001 Sarasota Center Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34240

What to include in your email:

  • Your full name and Sorrento East parcel address
  • A clear statement: "I oppose the installation of speed cushions on my street."
  • Reference: "Sorrento East Traffic Calming Request" in the subject line
  • (Optional but powerful) Your reason — emergency response delay, car damage, elderly impact, pet safety, whatever matters to you

Step 3: Talk to Your Neighbors

Share this website with your neighbors. Print flyers and distribute them on your street. Discuss the issue at your next block gathering. The more informed our community is, the stronger our voice — especially because opposition is measured per-street under the County program.

Step 4: Download and Review the Petition Form

Know what’s being submitted on your behalf. The official County form lists the four approved traffic calming devices: speed cushions, elevated crosswalks, driver feedback signs, or modular mini roundabouts. If the petitioners chose speed cushions, we can formally request they justify choosing the most harmful option.

Step 5: Attend the County Workshop

For speed cushions, the County must hold a stakeholder workshop. This is where opposition gets on the record. We’ll announce the date here as soon as the County schedules it. Bring your concerns, bring your neighbors, bring the research.

Step 6: Demand Transparency from the HOA

File a records request for all communications about the speed cushion proposal. Write to the Board expressing your concerns. Request copies of all meeting minutes. Florida Statute 720.303(5) gives you a legal right to this information.
